Dr. Ekwutosi Okoroh, is a Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) in the United States Public Health Service and the Team Lead for the Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Program (MCHEP), in the Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She oversees the scientific work of Senior Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Epidemiologists, 13 of whom, are assigned to state health departments. She is also leading a learning community with 4 states working to improve state capacity and capability to use data to address racial equity among the MCH population. 

 

Since July 2020, she has also co-led the Deployment Assessment and Monitoring (DAM) Team. The DAM team is a functional unit within the CDC’s Occupational Health Clinic, Office of Safety, Security, and Asset Management. The DAM team was established, during the COVID-19 CDC Response, to monitor the health of CDC employees (and others who deployed on behalf of CDC) during response deployments and to provide clinical guidance. Dr. Okoroh oversees 20-physician (11 contractors and 9 deployed staff) and 5-public health advisor. 

 

Dr. Okoroh joined CDC in 2010 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Division of Blood Disorders in the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities where her work focused on addressing bleeding and thrombotic issues among women of reproductive age. She currently holds 2 adjunct facility positions as a practicing Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OB/GYN) and provides vital clinical care to women at the Clarkston Community Health Center and the Harriet Tubman Women’s Clinic. She received her MD and MPH from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed her residency in OB/GYN at Phoenix Integrated Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Phoenix, Arizona.
