Event Description
A growing body of research shows that teams composed of people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences produce better and more innovative products and ideas than homogenous teams. Fostering diversity in the scientific research workforce is a key component of the NIH strategy to foster innovation and discovery, improve the quality of the research, and enhance global competitiveness.
Diversity Supplement Program administrative supplements are provided to existing NIH research grants to encourage high school, undergraduate and graduate/clinical students, postbaccalaureate and post Masters individuals, postdoctoral researchers and investigators from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in biomedical and behavioral research. This annual, two-day workshop brings together diversity supplement scholars from over 20 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Institutes and Centers.
The purpose of the workshop is to provide opportunities for scholars to meet NIH Program Staff, help to demystify the NIH grant and review process, and provide an overview of relevant funding mechanisms. Scholars will have the opportunity to advance their careers through the presentation of their research at a poster session, receive feedback on their ideas, and build their professional networks.
The goal of the workshop is for attendees to gain insights into the NIH grant funding process, meet with NIH staff and learn about best practices from NIH leadership, hear inspirational speakers, and network with past diversity supplement scholars who have successfully secured positions aligned with their career paths.
